Thought for the day

Yesterday, on my way to a breakfast meeting, I spotted a coyote running down a street in my neighborhood. Right after that, I caught a quick glance of the sunrise over the Arizona Canal--both streaks of yellow that took my breath away. Sometimes, the sudden glance is not enough. I wanted to pull over and take a picture but didn't; I'd have been late to my meeting.

That made me wonder if I should be scheduling "time with nature" on my calendar? That's one way to connect with our Best self.

Thoughts?

Hmmm, I'm wondering about the concept of "scheduling" time with nature. It seems like the best moments just happen -- like your quick view of the coyote and the colorful sunrise. What I think is more important is that you noticed these things at all, and that you reflected on them and savored them. Do you know how many people would have been so focused on their commute that they would have missed these glimpses of nature?

That's a good point, Hilda. Those two moments made me smile, and I felt what I posted about yesterday--satisfaction.

Jackie, those moments seem to come when I least expect them. I've learned to take my camera with me wherever I go. As you know, mine is not a small camera but I don't care. That's why I often use a large purse so I can store my camera in it. The sunrise in Phoenix can be beautiful and there's a spot where I can see the city skyline in the distance.

How often we miss those moments but they are there if our eyes are open to them.

Sending you a hug today,
Debbie

Maybe not schedule, per se, but strive to get out into nature at least once a day ... preferably at different times and keep your mind and eyes open to its wonders.

Jackie,
Besides carrying my camera, I've also started leaving the house a few minutes early when I'm out, just in case those moments pop up. I don't have to choose between being late and catching something awesome!

Kerri,

That's smart. I've begun to be chronically late these days. In fact, I was late to my own Wine & Sign last night--traffic. I don't predict it well, as I'm hardly ever in it! Leaving early would fix that, wouldn't it? I intended to do that last night but ran into a last-minute issue I had no choice but to deal with right then. I'm training myself not to worry about the little things, because "whatever will be, will be" (I was a big fan of Doris Day).

I have a scheduled walk in the woods across from my house in the morn and evening. My dog makes sure I keep on schedule!

I totally agree. But maybe it's just scheduling time that's unscheduled? I often see the most beautiful things when I'm not rushing anywhere. You can see and experience true beauty in the mall if your eyes and heart are open wide enough...

I try to remind myself--regardless of where I am--to notice what is around me...nature, pets, a plant, a work of art, a person. Not just see them but notice, take in what is right in front of me. It sounds like that is exactly what happened that moment in your car when you really "saw" the sunset.

Although I think it is a nice idea to schedule time to enjoy nature, it is those unplanned moments that make your day, leave a spring in your step and a smile on your face. You can't plan that.
